How to: Keeping Your Shed Secure

Having a storage shed in your backyard is amazing! It helps you cut down clutter, allows you to use your garage for cars (and not storage), and it keeps yard items more easily accessible. Yes, sheds can store everything from skis to holiday decorations, to tools to motorcycles. So, it goes without saying that you’re probably storing some valuable items in your shed. You might be a bit nervous about leaving the storage shed unprotected. However, there are a few things you can do to keep your shed safe and secure.

1. Lock the Gate to Your Yard

If your shed is in your fenced backyard, this is a pretty easy deterrent to implement. Simply use combination locks on your back gates. While potential thieves could still jump your fence, they won’t be able to easily get items out of your yard without smashing the lock. This would be quite loud, and someone would most likely notice. So, a simple combo lock can be a great way to secure your whole yard, including your shed.

2. Place A Lock on the Shed

Whether you have a huge shed, or a small shed for small places, if your shed isn’t in a fenced yard or you want to add another layer of protection a lock is a great option. You can place a combination lock on the shed itself. Most sheds have spots to put locks. So, you can easily secure the shed. Combination locks are great too because you don’t have to worry about a key or giving a key to anyone who needs to get in. A combination is something you remember or can give to friends and family easily.

5. Utilize Lights

Your shed probably won’t have electricity unless you’ve hired an electrician. So, you’ll need to have a way to plug the lights in or utilize solar-powered lights. Lights can be a huge deterrent when it comes to thieves. No one wants a huge spotlight on them when they’re trying to commit a crime–someone might see them! So, put up as many lights as you can in your yard around your shed. Motion-sensor lights or solar-powered lights that turn on in the dark are the best for shed security!

4. Install a Camera

If you want to go even more extreme with the security of your shed, you could always install cameras in and around it. A camera on your house pointed at the shed, a camera on your shed, or even one inside your shed can be great deterrents. You can set your cameras to pick up motion so that if anyone is in your yard or trying to get in your shed, you’ll not only see them, you’ll have a recording of them.

While no shed security precautions are perfect, these four ideas are a great place to start. If for whatever reason your shed becomes a target, it might be better to use it for storing items that aren’t as valuable and leave more valuable items in a more secure location that potential thieves do not know about.
